Case Study - Corus UK Limited, Port Talbot & Llanwern Works
Background
Part of the Tata Steel Group, Corus manufactures and distributes steel products and services to customers worldwide. Its Port Talbot works employs 3,600 people and produces some 4.7 million tonnes of steel a year, about 3 million tonnes of which is rolled on site, with the remainder being rolled at the Llanwern works, which has a 1,600-strong work force.
The Challenge
Corus had a requirement to digitise and upload all of the plant drawings for Port Talbot and Llanwern works to their server-based retrieval system so that essential records could be identified, captured and easily accessed via a single interface. There was also a requirement to store and retrieve original drawings for Port Talbot. The size of the project meant there were many variables and predetermined time schedules to consider.
The Solution
Due to the complexities involved, Transmedia provided a dedicated project manager who was seconded to Corus to coordinate the archival storage at the Transmedia facility. This was considered essential to the smooth running of the project. We commenced digitisation and indexing of the required drawings, together with archival storage of drawings on-site at Transmedia, at the same time creating a database for retrieval purposes. The scanning process for Llanwern is now complete and Port Talbot is scheduled to be completed over the next few months.
