VIEWMED: Visualising Nuclear Medical Imaging

Awarded to Transmedia employee Phillip Roberts while attending Swansea University.

Aim: To assist in the visualisation of nuclear medical imaging

Student: Philip Roberts

Company: Swansea NHS Trust Singleton Hospital

Additional information: Winner of the Software & Internet Technologies and Healthcare & Bio Sciences categories of the WDA Technology Awards 2002

The objective was to develop a system to assist in the visualisation of nuclear medical imaging. Nuclear medicine images are generally of high quality but lack in structural information, making it difficult for doctors to associate accurately features in an image with a specific part of human anatomy.

A visualisation tool known as VIEWMED (Visualisation Interactive Environment With Medical Evaluation for Diagnosis), was developed to take a nuclear medicine image and combine it with an image containing structural information (such as an X-ray image). VIEWMED uses an image registration technique to align the two images correctly. The technique was designed to ensure real-time interaction and visualisation.

VIEWMED also provides a collection of visualisation effects, in terms of colour, opacity and artistic strokes, for enhancing the visual cues in the combined display. For example, a nuclear medicine image can be assigned a semi-transparent red colour, and be placed on the top of an X-ray image, coloured in blue with a pencil drawing stroke. This allows doctors to associate the structure information from the X-ray, without being confused by new features introduced through the combined display.

This tool has the potential to enhance doctor's capability of understanding of complex medical data, and hence improving correct diagnosis, surgical planning, and therapy planning.

Fundraising - Transmedia’s Annual Bike Ride

For the last 3 years employees of Transmedia have participated in the Swansea to Brecon Bike Ride, some 45 miles for charity. Last year we managed to raise £1464.50 in total or Ty Hafan, The Children’s Hospice in Wales - www.tyhafan.org. We would like to thank all those involved for all the hard work and generosity which went into raising this money.

This year's charity will be announced soon and the bike ride will take place on 27th June 2009.

Fundraising - Comic Relief

Every year on Red Nose Day, Transmedia decide on a theme and have a ‘dressing up day’. This year is no exception and the theme is popstars/famous people and should be good fun. We are expecting Madonna as well as the Spice Girls to put in an appearance on the day!!

If you want to donate to this cause you can visit www.rednoseday.com

Contract Awards

The National Archives - Transmedia recently successfully bid for 3 lots in a framework agreement with The National Archives in Kew, London. This means that Transmedia will continue to serve The National Archives with its digitisation of heritage and World War II collections for the next 4 years, which is fantastic news!

University of Wales - Strategic Partners

Over the past three years, Transmedia has established a strong strategic alliance with the University of Wales, Swansea, including a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) in Workflow Production Engineering. We have also worked in close partnership on a Knowledge Exploitation Fund (KEF) research project set up by the Computer Science department of the University. Transmedia brought invaluable resources and knowledge to this project to develop an integrated archiving, exhibiting and printing service for web-based images and videos.

National Archives

We are currently engaged in a significant project to scan hundreds of thousands of microfilm images for the National Archives based in Kew, London. The project requires 100% OCR verification and involves the manual insertion of unrecognised words and word strings.
